BITCH Magazine Is Going Out Of Business After 26 Years And Feminist Media Will Not Be The Same
A few weeks ago, it was reported that feminist magazine Bitch, would be ceasing operations in June. I’m not surprised by this, cause it’s hard out here for a publication, especially a feminist one, but I’m still sad at this news, nonetheless. I often talk about how influential BUST has been, but BITCH has a special place in my heart too.
Bitch was known for more analytical pieces, more serious, but just as intriguing and thought provoking. I got a chance to write for them one time, I pitched a short profile on Ceyenne Doroshow, for a memoir-cookbook she released through The Red Umbrella Project. I always wanted to write or work for them again in some capacity, so I was stoked when I saw that they were hiring a senior editor last year. I interviewed with the then editor-in-chief over the phone, but ultimately didn’t get the position. At the time this felt like a blow, not only because I would have loved to work with a legacy publication, writing the type of stories and pieces that mattered to me, but also I was jones-ing for something more permanent at the time.
A few weeks to maybe a month later, I ended up getting my job at BUST as the digital editor. While the offer wasn’t perfect (hello part-time hours...) it was great to work with people that know and respect me and produce work that I’m proud of. I was just as shocked as the rest of the journalism world when BITCH announced they would be ceasing operations, but unfortunately, their tough times, were a reminder for me to be grateful for all that I have. Had I got that job, I’d be unemployed now ( #facts.)
I used to have a huge problem with #fomo, but instances like this remind me that you ever know what’s going on behind the scenes, and fomo, might just be a state of mind.
